OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Live, an innovative voice AI aiming to enhance conversational experiences by enabling simultaneous speaking and listening. This advancement is made possible through its full-duplex architecture, allowing the AI to interject with natural acknowledgments like “mhmm” or “yeah,” making interactions more fluid and reducing awkward pauses.
For tasks requiring more intricate operations such as web searches or complex reasoning, GPT-Live is equipped to delegate these to a more robust AI model working in the background, all while maintaining a seamless dialogue with the user. Currently, these sophisticated functions are supported by GPT-5.5, with plans to integrate support for even more advanced models in upcoming updates.
This announcement coincides with OpenAI’s recent confirmation that it will release its GPT-5.6 model series to the public following the completion of an additional cybersecurity review. The GPT-5.6 lineup features the prominent Sol model, alongside its Terra and Luna counterparts, marking a significant step in AI development.
OpenAI has already commenced the global rollout of two versions of this new voice model, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, to users of ChatGPT. In addition to this, the company intends to offer GPT-Live through its API, which will allow developers and businesses to incorporate real-time voice AI capabilities into their applications, broadening the scope of interactive AI technology.
