Spotify is set to implement new strategies to tackle the rising presence of AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, the streaming giant will label AI-created artist profiles and track listings with an “AI persona” tag. This initiative aims to help listeners differentiate between human musicians and artificial artist identities, while simultaneously protecting genuine artists from losing visibility due to the influx of AI-generated content.

By default, AI personas will also be excluded from personalized recommendations, a move designed to maintain the prominence of real musicians in user experiences. Spotify will permit artists to declare if their identities are AI-generated. However, the platform will also employ human reviewers alongside AI-powered tools to identify any undisclosed AI personas.

This decision comes in response to the rapid growth of AI-generated music, which has increasingly populated music platforms. In a previous statement, Spotify revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks over a year, underscoring the scale of artificial and low-quality content entering the digital music space.

Spotify emphasizes that transparency is becoming crucial as generative AI continues to proliferate in the music industry. The company acknowledges that listeners are increasingly interested in knowing whether a track is produced by a real person or an AI-generated entity. This transparency initiative marks a significant development in how music streaming services are adapting to the challenges posed by technological advancements in music creation.
