The Sleep Solution: A Chiropractor’s Advice on the Best (and Worst) Positions

Achieving a truly restorative night’s sleep is about more than just logging hours; it’s about how you sleep. A spine alignment specialist has provided a clear guide, identifying two common positions that harm the spine and offering solutions for better rest. The expert emphasized that sleep is the body’s prime time for repair, but a poor posture can create uneven pressure, misalign the spine, and strain nerves, hindering this process.

The specialist warned that the long-term effects of bad sleeping habits are serious. He stated that continued poor posture at night can lead to chronic back and neck pain and even create a lasting posture imbalance. The first position to be “flagged” was sleeping on the stomach. The specialist cautioned that this forces the neck into a sustained twist, which can strain muscles and compress nerves in the cervical spine.

The problems with stomach sleeping extend to the lower back. The expert explained that this “unnatural” position causes the lumbar region to arch excessively, putting undue stress on the lower vertebrae. This combination of neck and back strain is why many stomach sleepers wake up stiff and sore, or with tingling in their arms.

The second position to avoid is the tightly curled-up fetal position. While it may feel comforting, the specialist noted that tucking the knees tightly to the chest causes the spine to round too much. This over-stretches the back muscles, tightens the hip flexors, and restricts the diaphragm, which limits deep breathing. This can lead to decreased flexibility and chronic mid-back pain.

The “best sleeping posture,” according to the specialist, is one that maintains the spine’s natural curve. He advised sleeping on your back with a small pillow under your knees to support the lower back, or on your side with a supportive pillow between your legs to keep the hips level. These positions distribute weight evenly, prevent strain, and are the key to waking up refreshed.
