In a significant move towards enhancing road safety, Türkiye has witnessed a steep decline in dangerous driving violations following the implementation of stringent traffic laws and heightened enforcement strategies earlier this year. The amendments to the Highway Traffic Law, effective from February 27, have introduced harsher penalties for a variety of offenses that pose major risks to safety on the roads.
Among the most notable improvements is the dramatic reduction in dangerous lane-weaving incidents, where drivers frequently switch lanes at high speeds. Official statistics reveal that 47,380 such offenses were recorded between February 27 and May 31 of last year, compared to just 3,306 in the same period this year, marking an impressive 93% decrease. Authorities credit this significant decline to the reinforced penalties and the nationwide increase in road inspections.
The impact of the crackdown extends across several other traffic violation categories. Notably, offenses related to tachographs, which involve the monitoring of commercial vehicle driving and rest-time records, have decreased by 80.2%. Speeding violations have also seen a considerable reduction, falling by 55.1%.
Additional improvements include a 52.4% drop in cases of non-compliance with police stop orders, a 36.4% decline in helmet-related infractions, and a 33.7% decrease in incidents of driving without a valid license. Authorities have also reported reduced rates of wrong-way driving, violations of traffic signs, red-light offenses, drunk driving, and seat belt violations.
The government emphasizes that these reforms are part of a broader initiative aimed at improving road safety, minimizing accidents, and providing better protection for lives and property across the nation. The implemented measures represent a concerted effort to ensure safer driving conditions and enhance public safety on Türkiye’s roads.
