How a War in Europe Is Shaping Defense Strategy Across the Middle East

The war in Ukraine is reshaping defense thinking far beyond Europe. President Zelenskyy’s announcement that Ukraine will share its drone defense expertise with the United States and Middle Eastern partners reflects how the conflict’s innovations are now influencing military strategy across the globe.

The immediate catalyst is Iran’s use of Shahed drones against nations in the Middle East — the same weapons Russia has deployed against Ukraine by the tens of thousands. Faced with this common threat, the US and Gulf states have turned to Ukraine, whose engineers have spent years developing cost-effective countermeasures under genuine combat conditions.

Zelenskyy confirmed he has spoken with leaders from five countries — the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait — and that a formal US request for assistance was received and acted upon. He issued orders for Ukrainian equipment and technical experts to be provided, while stressing that the assistance would not undermine Ukraine’s own defense capabilities.

The technological contribution Ukraine is offering is significant. Its low-cost interceptor drones, capable of destroying Shaheds for as little as $1,000 per unit, have set a new standard for affordable air defense. Countries that have previously relied on expensive multimillion-dollar aircraft to respond to drone threats are taking careful note of what Ukraine has achieved.

The EU’s top diplomat reinforced the significance of Ukraine’s experience during talks between European and Gulf foreign ministers, noting that Ukraine’s know-how should inform regional efforts to counter Iranian drones. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy warned that the Middle East crisis has temporarily derailed Russia-Ukraine peace talks, but framed Ukraine’s assistance to allies as part of a larger strategy to build the kind of international support that will ultimately help end the war.
