European leaders gathered in Kyiv to discuss urgent strategies for bolstering Ukraine’s air-defense systems amid escalating Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. The Coalition of the Willing, spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, convened to address these pressing needs, with several other European leaders joining the discussions remotely. Antonio Costa, the President of the EU Council, was also in attendance to lend his support.
The intensifying missile strikes from Russia have targeted Kyiv and other urban areas, resulting in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential infrastructure. In response, Ukraine has been vocal in urging its allies to supply additional air-defense systems and interceptor missiles to safeguard its population. The meeting aims to find solutions to meet these demands and maintain pressure on Moscow.
As part of the efforts to support Ukraine, Britain is poised to announce further aid, while France is set to begin local production of the SCALP long-range missile. France has additionally committed to providing more interceptor missiles to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. These initiatives underscore the European allies’ commitment to assisting Ukraine in countering Russian aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concerns over the diminishing deliveries of Patriot interceptor missiles. While Ukraine received 675 of these interceptors in 2023, the numbers dropped to 364 in 2025, and projections for 2026 suggest a further decline to 264. As winter approaches, Kyiv is seeking at least 300 interceptors to strengthen its defenses against Russian ballistic missiles, which pose a significant interception challenge.
Ukraine’s reliance on sophisticated Western air-defense systems remains critical in its effort to fend off Russian missile threats. European allies are actively exploring ways to increase their supply of these vital defense resources, ensuring Ukraine is better equipped to protect its cities and maintain pressure on Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
