Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has raised concerns about the increasing power of social media algorithms, referring to it as “algorithm fascism.” He highlighted that these digital mechanisms are increasingly influencing public opinion and complicating the ability to discern truth from misinformation. Speaking at the Second Communication Council in Ankara, Erdoğan emphasized how the rapid development of artificial intelligence and communication technologies has revolutionized information dissemination while simultaneously amplifying the spread of disinformation.
Erdoğan pointed out that social media has the potential to shape people’s thoughts, influence their interpretation of events, and even alter historical narratives, posing significant risks to cultural values and social cohesion. As digital platforms continue to play a pivotal role in shaping perceptions, he warned about the challenges in distinguishing facts from created perceptions.
The Communication Council, as explained by Erdoğan, is designed to contribute to the development of Türkiye’s future communication strategy. The event serves as a platform for collaboration among government officials, academics, media representatives, and civil society experts, with a focus on enhancing public communication policies that align with the country’s long-term vision.
In his address, Erdoğan also touched upon the ongoing legal proceedings related to the Ahbap charity. He assured that authorities are actively investigating allegations of individuals exploiting public trust following the 2023 earthquakes, and that those responsible are being held accountable through the judicial process.
