The European Union has implemented a new customs handling fee of €3 (approximately $3.40) on low-value e-commerce parcels entering its borders. This move specifically targets overseas platforms such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, which previously enjoyed duty-free status. The fee is designed to be applied to each customs classification within a shipment, meaning that parcels with various product categories will incur multiple charges, whereas shipments with identical items will only face a single €3 fee.
According to EU officials, this initiative is intended to combat unfair competition and curb the exploitation of customs exemptions that have allowed foreign online retailers to sell goods at significantly reduced prices. The surge in low-value parcel imports has been notable in recent years, mainly due to the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce.
Industry experts anticipate that the introduction of these fees will lead to a short-term decrease in e-commerce air shipments into Europe. This development may prompt online platforms to reevaluate their pricing strategies or potentially negotiate with suppliers to absorb some of the additional costs.
