As temperatures rise during summer nights, getting restful sleep can become a challenge. Experts highlight that excessive heat significantly affects both the quality and duration of sleep, particularly impacting deep sleep, which is crucial for bodily recovery and rejuvenation. While the recommended bedroom temperature is typically between 16°C and 18°C, when the mercury climbs above 24°C, tossing and turning often ensues.

However, several straightforward adjustments can help keep you cool and enhance sleep comfort during heatwaves. Start by choosing bedding and mattresses made from breathable materials. Natural fibers like wool, bamboo, and linen are excellent choices as they promote air circulation and draw moisture away from the body, making them ideal for warm weather conditions.

If a new mattress isn’t feasible, consider a cooling mattress topper crafted from breathable materials for relief. Linen sheets and pillowcases are also advisable as they stay light and comfortable, even on humid nights. For a quick cool-down before bed, try placing pillowcases or lightweight pyjamas in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes. This temporary chill can facilitate easier sleep onset when temperatures soar.

Cooling duvets that help regulate body temperature can further prevent overheating. Additionally, fans or air coolers equipped with misting functions can lower room temperatures, enhancing comfort. A lukewarm shower about 30 minutes before bedtime is another effective method. Although a cold shower might seem tempting, cool water is more effective in lowering body temperature without causing subsequent discomfort.

To keep bedrooms cool, ensure curtains and blinds remain closed during the day to block out sunlight. This is especially important for children and babies, who may require lighter clothing and cooler sleeping environments in hot weather. Additional tips include using facial mist sprays, wearing blackout sleep masks, and freezing a hot-water bottle overnight to use as a cooling pack. Despite the potential for disrupted sleep during heatwaves, these small changes to bedding, room temperature, and bedtime routines can make summer nights significantly more bearable.
